Doggie Expo - Day #1

This weekend the PEI Humane Society is hosting
their annual Doggie Expo....Tiny Paws Dog
Rescue (the rescue group our Mom volunteers with) hosted a booth.....

And while Mamma didn't see any wieners at the is
a "pretend" one she spotted!

This nice lady & her dog volunteer with St.John Ambulance...

Whoa there...big fella! This awesome great dane...stood as tall as a horse (they had horse agility at the event...who knew horses did agility??)

Introducing...Harry...he is a certified therapy Corgi...he visits all the wonderful people in nursing homes...his sister Phoebe was there too...but she is a bit too "vocal" to be a therapy dog..

Ok...good thing Schatzi wasn't at the expo...cause this lady does Ferret Rescue...can you just imagine how much fun Schatzi would have chasing a ferret? Enuf said....

This is Riley...he is a regular at Global Pet Food, where Mama gets our good grub...his Mama works at Global & he suffers separation he goes to work with her...lucky boy!

And this little guy, sporting the bling Pedro...he is an agility dog...and boy is he super fast! His Mama and Dad operate Paws on the Beach Boarding kennels & they are involved in agility and flyball!

Today is Day #2 of the Expo...Mama & Xena are going to attend & be in the booth again. Hopefully, we get lots of member applications...cause without foster homes Tiny Paws can't help small dogs!!

Canine Cognitive Dysfunction

For the past few months, we have been treating Xena's CCD with daily doseages of Clomicalm & Aprazalam, however her symptoms have begun to increase, as her condition progresses. We discontinued Clomicalm & yesterday started her on Anipryl, which is a drug used to treat Parkinson's & Alzheimer's Disease in humans. The Aprazalm has been increased to twice daily along with the Anipryl.

Everyone should be aware of changes in their senior dog...some of the symptoms can be:

Confusion - your dog doesn't greet or seem to recognize you as before, or gets 'lost' in the yard or house. They may no longer respond to their name. Xena will get "stuck" behind furniture.

Inappropriate vocalization - barking - in the middle of the night or for no 'good' reason? (I know, some dogs don't need a reason to bark. - right Oskar?) Xena will wake 2-4 times each night...roam to the kitchen & sit and cry. (or "barmp" we call it).

Getting day and night mixed up - sleeping all day, awake all night - Yep..see above.

Confusing indoor and outdoor - a previously housebroken dog may soil in the house. Xena does ok with this during the day, but requires pad nightly.

Personality changes - a formerly outgoing dog can become timid or aggressive. This is where we see quite a change in Xena...once a cuddle bug...she now does not like to be held or snuggled. And she will attempt to "bite" or when she is anxious to be fed...she nips at my feet!

These are just a few of the symptoms we have noted....while it is heart breaking...Xena remains in good health & we continue to keep her comfortable & as content as possible.
