Introducing Clancy Mae!!

I didn't realize how many people still follow along on this blog.....it truly warms my heart!

After the devastation of losing our precious Liesel in May of 2025......we made the difficult decision to be done.....no more dachshunds!  Our hearts could not sustain another loss....

Everything.....and I mean everything we had for Liesel was donated to dachshund rescue!  There was no better place for her things....I couldn't just sell them....or "give things away".....but being involved in rescue for 25 years.....donating to the group was the right decision.  Some dachshunds come into rescue with nothing but their fur.....if one blanket or stuffy of Liesel's donated could bring a bit of love to a dachshund in need....so be it.

Our home was never the same after Liesel passed.....with our previous dachshunds...it was just as difficult....with the exception we had three at one time.  And when we only had Oskar....Liesel joined our family.

With her passing....the house was empty.  For months we were so sad....and I was heartbroken & lonely.

When I could no longer take the pain....I bravely advised my husband I couldn't "do it any more!".   His puzzled (and fearful...lol) face asked "do what?"   I shared how unhappy, lonely and how much I missed Liesel.

His response?  "Let's get another".  I've missed her too."    Okay.  Who are you?  What have you done with my husband?  I was in shock.  He was adamant-no more dachshunds.  He couldn't go through "it" again.  And here he was casually saying "Let's get another".

So we did.  In December 2025 I thought we would be adding a pie-bald boy from a local breeder....he had two red sisters as well.  But all three pups were show quality & therefore not going to "companion homes".

Enter Miss Clancy Mae....from Bournecrest Kennel in Ontario!  She is a miniature red smooth!  Not a pie bald after all!  Or a boy!  I have wanted a red dachshund for years.....and decided now would be my time!!

One of the first puppy photos of her....is she not the most precious puppy you've ever seen?  Look at those adorable paws!! (her breeder sent this pic)....

I knew she was meant to be ours!  The age requirement for flying with Air Canada is 10 weeks from Toronto to Charlottetown.  Since her breeder had two litters due any day.....her neighbour drove Clancy Mae to the airport...(a three hour drive).  I compensated her for her time, travel....and purchased a new crate from her to transport Clancy Mae safely.  (the sweet neighbour was a Westie breeder & had an extra brand new, unused airline approved kennel).

She flew on April 15, 2026 .& was in the air a little over an hour..... we were waiting anxiously at the airport! There was another kennel on the flight......with two miniature long hair dachshunds being transported as well! Three dachshunds on board!!

We are located a mere 5-10 minutes from our airport....here we are home with her safe & sound...

And girl....was so stinky!!  I suspect having been peed on a few times by littermates....lol.  First order of business the next day.....a warm bath!! (she weighed all of 3.5 pounds!!)

She loves to go in the car....I purchased a new car seat for her.....since I had donated my last one....

 What unconditional love looks like!!

Here she is - photo taken a couple of days ago!  She is up to 8 pounds!  We attended five weeks of puppy socialization classes & we are currently in obedience training.  The trainers come to our home every two weeks....and we cannot believe how smart Clancy Mae is!  She is very easy to train....quite a feat for a dachshund!

Another favourite of hers is to walk our beautiful Island trails!  We walk her twice daily....good for her & good for us...she had no problems mastering walking on leash or with a harness!   Her first few harnesses were "cat" harnesses.....trying to find one to fit....for a little thing as big as a squirrel!!

This photo was taken in August....shortly after her spay!  We are using a new veterinary clinic....located on the same road we live on!  Since dachshunds are prone to back & health issues.....we carry pet insurance....just in case.  I purchased two Johnny shirt style cover ups....worked perfect at covering up her incision....in the event she scratched or licked at it.  The shirts required were for cats...since she was so small....the dog ones were too big.

She didn't mind wearing them for a couple of weeks...

Walking one of our beautiful trails....the days & evenings are getting cooler now....she currently weighs 8 pounds!  Today is weigh in day....and while we are at the pet food store doing that.....we will pick up kibble & roasted bones....

A gorgeous close up....we are pretty smitten with her!  It took us a little time to choose a name for her....I had in the past chosen German names....since dachshunds are a German breed.  We decided not to go that route this time.....I had actually chosen Yancy in the beginning....Mr. Seventies loved that name.  At that time, we thought we would be adding a male...my daughter suggested Clancy.

I loved the name for a girl pup....and thus Clancy Mae was chosen!!   Everyone comments how much they love her name! (or they are just being nice....lol).  Either way....we love her name.

This post is longer than I intended....but wanted to share our happy news!  I miss the dog blog....but you can follow along on my additional blog here....https://myseventiessplit.blogspot.com/
I share a bit about Clancy Mae there as well!
